Summary

。。。more

Having read Metro 2033 and Metro 2024 in quick succession, I felt in a good position to evaluate this book。 I had heard that it was the best of the trilogy and so I tried finding it in a hardback format but with no success; I'd also heard that there were issues with the translation and editing but, again, failed to find an alternative edition。 When the book arrived I immediately realised why this was:It's published by Amazon themselves。It's quite hard to judge the underlying story because the is Having read Metro 2033 and Metro 2024 in quick succession, I felt in a good position to evaluate this book。 I had heard that it was the best of the trilogy and so I tried finding it in a hardback format but with no success; I'd also heard that there were issues with the translation and editing but, again, failed to find an alternative edition。 When the book arrived I immediately realised why this was:It's published by Amazon themselves。It's quite hard to judge the underlying story because the issues with translation and editing are so severe, and I'll come to those shortly。But suffice it to say that Metro 2035 is as different a book to Metro 2033 as was Metro 2034 was (which is to say that they bear only superficial similarities of setting)。First of all, in common with Metro 2034, all the characters have had personality transplants and it's nearly impossible to reconcile them with their Metro 2033 versions。Secondly, what made Metro 2033 great was the oppressiveness and the psychological-terror; but also, crucially, the fight of people to overcome those factors。 Metro 2035 is instead really a Nihilistic view of of human nature and human striving。It also lack subtlety in a number of ways but the one that is the greatest disappointment is the same area where Metro 2034 failed。 In Metro 2033 that different ideologies have become more or less influential in different parts of the underground metro system was an interesting one; and in Metro 2034 this theme is extended and really became a barely veiled analogy for the modern political world (Communism, Fascism, Capitalism, etc。) but done with such lack of subtlety that it becomes a ham-fisted caricature that fails to fascinate and rather has to be borne by the reader。Metro 2035 is in some ways worse because the underlying message (plot-wise and politically) is that all the factions are at root the same and that is because their evils come from people whatever their stripes。On the one hand, the inclusion of a sort of heavy-duty Nihilism about the prospect of real change in society is a good thing (and one can't help but think that the author is directly writing about the USSR or later entities), however, it should have been but one stop along the road。 I think that the first more Nihilistic observation was perhaps missing from Metro 2033 (a forgivable omission given the short length of the book), but, by the same token, the key metro 2033 theme that people are also responsible for making change happen is missing from this last book of the trilogy。Towards the end of the book it felt like a very 'Russian' story insofar that it's all about the crushing inevitability of huge forces outside of one's control。 I put the word 'Russian' in scare-quotes because I don't mean to imply this of all Russian literature but rather that it's a characteristic of a cliche of Russian literature。Now, to the print itself。The binding itself is good as far as mass market paperbacks go and I've seen much worse for main stream sci-fi printed by big name publishers; also the paper quality is surprisingly good quality too。However, the translation is pretty terrible; I get the strong feeling that large sections were simply run through Google translate (and I hate to say that as translating is a very difficult and thankless job)。One of the least offenders: Dietmar pulled out of his sleeve a champagne bottle, refilled with some kind of enigma, which he had bought at some moment unknown, and gallantly presented it to their hostess。 And, no, "enigma" isn't some Metro-speciality drink。。。。Likewise the editing is just terrible; full-stops and commas all over the place like a syntactic hand-grenade went off。 But on the other hand, chapter 18 (for one example) is, by and large, well translated and decently edited so it's a real mixed-bag。I really wanted to like this book and I don't regret having read it (you should read it) but it's definitely one of those books that I loved more for what it could have been。。。more, for what it should have been than what it was。Ultimately, you have to judge this edition in the context of Amazon having taken it upon themselves to do the work and I have to appreciate that effort。For the story itself I'd stretch (just) to 3-stars but the edition of print itself is 1-2 stars。 。。。more

This kind of men cave。So yes, this was an awful books。 An awful misogynist books and I am glad I’ve finally finish it。Oh, and the plot was awful too。 。。。more

This book established competing feelings within me。 I want to say I enjoyed it as much as the previous two entries in the series, and in some ways I did, but overall, it seemed to me to be a far less pleasing novel overall。In "Metro 2035," we follow the hero of "Metro 2033" and the "Metro" video game series as he tries to search for life outside of Moscow。 The narrative ramps up over the course of the novel to the point where Artyom, our protagonist, ends up making enemies with nearly everyone i This book established competing feelings within me。 I want to say I enjoyed it as much as the previous two entries in the series, and in some ways I did, but overall, it seemed to me to be a far less pleasing novel overall。In "Metro 2035," we follow the hero of "Metro 2033" and the "Metro" video game series as he tries to search for life outside of Moscow。 The narrative ramps up over the course of the novel to the point where Artyom, our protagonist, ends up making enemies with nearly everyone in the tunnels。 I don't want to dive into spoilers, but will give my overall thoughts。In this novel, Artyom has an almost single-minded obsession to finding out if there is life outside of the Metro。 This obsession means he leaves his wife on a journey with the mysterious Homer to find someone who has evidence of life, and it means he pushes past everyone in the process to reach his goal。 This is quite different from the Artyom in the first novel, who goes out of his way to save everyone he sees, to the point of even trying to save his "enemy," the mysterious Dark Ones。 There are some minor instances of heroism here, particularly when Artyom tries to save the life of a young boy, but throughout the novel, he's an uncouth, rude, and angry man who troublingly decides to leave his wife for the comfort of a prostitute (though, later, luckily he changes his mind)。Anya, his wife, is barely in the book, and merely serves as a whipping post for most of it。 And Miller, his father-in-law, is so thoroughly unlikeable in this novel that it's hard for me to imagine that Glukhovsky wrote him as the same character that we see in the previous books and games。 I mean, this book really makes you hate Miller。Our overarching antagonist takes the form of a "Man Behind the Curtain," and it's not really well-done in my opinion。 We only reach this climax for the last eighty or so pages of the novel, and by this point, we have slogged with Artyom through the metro for so long, it doesn't seem like the point was built up as well as it could have been。 I was also disappointed to see that there were no monsters/creatures/cryptids present in this book。 It's like they have been completely extinguished from the metro without us having found out about it。 Those were some of the best parts in the earlier novels。Where Glukhovsky really excels, however, is in the intimate moment-to-moment encounters we the reader experience through Artyom。 Even in the English translation, the plot is written so beautifully and in such a detailed manner that it's easy to picture what Artyom sees。 I've always said that there are parts of "Metro 2033" that still stick with me to this day, and while "Metro 2035" doesn't entirely reach that pinnacle, Glukhovsky is a serious master of detail and description。 One of the best, in my opinion。There were some translation errors in the novel。 There are many mistakes present。 In particular, the opening chapter is a bit difficult to read, though once you get in the groove, it becomes a riveting novel。So why did I only give it 3 stars? It's really because this isn't the "Metro" book that I thought it could be。 In fact, "Metro: Exodus," the latest video game in the series, which follows from "Metro: Last Light" takes the overarching idea of "Metro 2035" and executes it far better。 Instead of wondering if there is life outside of the metro, we see that there is。 We struggle with Artyom。 We see his love for Anya。 We really get to see the quite moments that the "Metro" series is known for develop in real-time, as characters get married, as guitars get played, as people share drinks, and as love grows。 While some of this is present in "Metro 2035," the book overall consists of a grim, violent, fatalistic narrative that doesn't slow down (or speed up) for its entirety。 We end on a somewhat positive note, but nothing has really been resolved。 And it's like we haven't really left the metro, either。 。。。more

First of all I have to say I didn't like Metro 2033 that much。 While the premise is outstanding, I can't help wondering how fantastic this book series might have been in the hands of a more competent writer。 Dmitry Glukhovsky couldn’t write plot, characters or dialogue to save his life。 Where the surface world was a dangerous place in 2033, with radiation and vicious beasts constant threats, in 2035 you can seemingly stroll around overground in swim trunks and flip-flops without problem。 It's as First of all I have to say I didn't like Metro 2033 that much。 While the premise is outstanding, I can't help wondering how fantastic this book series might have been in the hands of a more competent writer。 Dmitry Glukhovsky couldn’t write plot, characters or dialogue to save his life。 Where the surface world was a dangerous place in 2033, with radiation and vicious beasts constant threats, in 2035 you can seemingly stroll around overground in swim trunks and flip-flops without problem。 It's as if the author didn't bother to read the first book before writing this one。 I like the basic idea of the (view spoiler)[conspiracy, that the people in the Moscow subway are being manipulated and that the rest of the world has survived (hide spoiler)], it's just infuriating that it's in the hands of such an incompetent writer。 Again a wasted opportunity。 。。。more

Much better! This final installment truly feels like the epic that I was told it was (though, I won’t lie, it came a little too late for me)。 There’s a clear goal and set of challenges and consequences that feel real to this world, and are just as heavy。 What really saves all this for me though is how it ends。 Not to spoil anything, but even though it is pretty far from happy, these three novel’s more than set it up if you’re truly paying attention and don’t have your head in the clouds。 There’s Much better!

。。。more

I have to admit that in his novel Metro 2035, which crowns the famous trilogy, Glukhovsky rose to the occasion。 After the phenomenal Metro 2033 and the relatively average Metro 2034, we received a much more mature book, emphasizing other types of problems and a much different perspective。Reading Metro 2035, it is clear that we are not dealing with a fledgling, young and novice author, but with a confident person who is not afraid to touch on sensitive and much more courageous topics。The plot its I have to admit that in his novel Metro 2035, which crowns the famous trilogy, Glukhovsky rose to the occasion。 After the phenomenal Metro 2033 and the relatively average Metro 2034, we received a much more mature book, emphasizing other types of problems and a much different perspective。Reading Metro 2035, it is clear that we are not dealing with a fledgling, young and novice author, but with a confident person who is not afraid to touch on sensitive and much more courageous topics。The plot itself (fortunately) returns to the main antagonist - Artyom, who has to face this time not so much with the monsters lurking on the surface, but mainly with people who have been divided into several fronts fighting with each other。Sometimes the position (due to its length) was boring, but most of the time it was kept in suspense so that the reader wanted to turn the next and the next page。Interestingly, the ending leaves a grain of uncertainty in us, hence it's great that after reading this great trilogy, we have access to a huge number of items written by writers from around the world that describe the fate of other heroes who are in the Metro universe! To sum up, Metro 2035 is a must for all fans of the series。 It is the culmination of Artyom's 3-year adventure and a summary of everything that happened during those 3 years。 A very interesting item - I recommend it to everyone (including those who are discouraged by Metro 2034)。 。。。more

Z miłą chęcią kiedyś wrócę do Uniwersum Metro 2033 i przeczytam kolejne opowiadania。 。。。more
